Many people think about where they want to be in five years’ time or what they want to achieve at work within the following year.
Goals are extremely important to determine where you are going and when you want to get there. However, it is important to set practical goals. This does not mean that you should not be ambitious, but give yourself more time to achieve it.
To achieve your goals, you must know how to set goals. It’s no good saying “I want this” and then to expect that it will happen. When you set goals, you must consider each goal carefully and see what you want to achieve because getting there is hard work.
Divide your bigger goal into smaller goals. Say, for example, you decide to run a marathon this year ─ start slowly by, for instance, jogging for only five minutes every day and then gradually increasing it. This will help you to achieve small successes and to stay motivated.
Do not allow your goals to be determined by other people. It will not feel like your own goal and you will not be motivated to achieve it. If other people are involved in your goal, they can help you to define it but do not let them force their goals on you.
Define your goals clearly so that you can get a plan ready. It is not necessarily wise to, for instance, say that you want to improve something by between 50% and 100% because 50% is not necessarily going to involve the same amount of energy or the same plan as 100%.
You should also understand why goals are important to you. If you do not buy in yourself you may not have the determination to keep you motivated. Be firm regarding your goals but more pliable about your approach so that you can see the goal line all the time.
It is important to regularly check where you are in the process of achieving your goals. This will help to keep you motivated because you can see what you have achieved, with the finishing line fast approaching. And when you strike potholes, you will still be able to see that you are making progress.
Goals give people purpose and help you to focus. You are then no longer in the passenger seat of your life, but behind the steering. So, set clever goals that motivate you and that are within your grasp, that you can measure and that you can stay with.
